Chapter Seventeen

This time meeting up with Michael, I got smarter and decided I would leave a bit later than normal. I just got onto the subway at just the time we were about to meet up. Knowing that we would be getting cocktails at the Le Melon D’eau, I calculated just enough time for me to get there fashionably late. As soon as I got into the ticketing area of the station, there was a ringing in my pocket, and Michael’s caller I.D flashed across the screen.

“Hello?” I said after picking up.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“I’m on my way.” I looked around at my surroundings, “I’ll be there in about ten minutes?”

“We said we were going to be here at eight o’clock; you’re late.”

I rolled my eyes; the one time I decided to be late and Michael was early.

I inhaled deeply and replied, “Sorry, Michael. Just wait for me. I’ll be there soon.”

“Drinks are on you tonight.”

“Fiiiine.”

I hung up the phone and started running to my train car. It was just three stops to Madison Square Garden, so I just decided I would stand on the train. There was another buzz from my phone, and this time when I flipped it over, I was surprised to receive a text from James.

You know, I was thinking that it might be nice to go ice skating sometime.

There was suddenly a huge smile on my face, and I replied, That would be really nice, I suppose. Are you asking me to go ice skating with you?

Depends, will I get rejected?

Maybe. You’ll just have to take a risk to find out. ;)

The green light indicating that he saw my message flashed on the screen, and then no answer ensued. I stared at the screen for a good couple of minutes before putting it away. The train announcer came over the line saying that the train was at Madison Square. I would’ve missed my stop if I didn’t suddenly start to pay attention.

I got up and made my way towards the exit. The underground tunnel was filled with people, and holiday decorations were hung everywhere. Garlands, sparkles, and green pine. The smells of hot chocolate and pine trees were in the air. It was a festive sight to behold.

There were people rushing everywhere, getting their holiday shopping done. A lady whisked by with both hands filled with shopping bags; children rushed past me in beanies chasing each other down the hall. I consulted my phone for the directions on how to get to the restaurant, and I needed to make my way towards Twenty-Third Street where the building was.

When I walked up the stairs, the beautiful gleaming lights of Christmas trees were all lined up the sides, and there was a Santa in the middle ringing a bell for donations. I noted the crosswalk and walked briskly to meet with Michael.
